What are your qualifications?

  • Bachelor of Psychological Science with Honours (4 years)

What does your role entail?

The Evolve Behaviour Support Services team is a service that provides behaviour support and assessment for children and young people under 18 who are either in the care of Child Safety or at risk or being relinquished by their parents to child safety.

Many of our clients have some type of disability on top of a background of trauma and abuse and require intensive support to help manage their behaviours. As such, we work collaboratively with the children’s parents/carers and school teachers to understand how a child’s background affects their behaviours, and then train those adults in how they can best support the young person.

My job is never boring and entails a mix of field work — at schools and homes — and office-based work such as report writing.  

Why did you choose to work for the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services?

I thought it would be great for my first job to be with an organisation where I would be well supported in the transition from university to a professional role.  

What do you like best about your job?

I work with a very positive, friendly team of colleagues who are always willing to offer guidance on any challenges I may face. I also love working with children and adolescents as I feel we are able to make positive changes that will set them on a more successful life path.

It’s also great coming to work and enjoying spending time with your colleagues — and having a laugh at lunch or social events. 

Anything you didn’t expect?

So many acronyms and departmental jargon/language! It takes a bit of time to get used to.

What is your advice for a new graduate?

Be open and willing to take on tasks that you may not have expected to do, or have never done before. This shows you are committed to being a team player and will go above and beyond the usual role requirements. You can always ask for help if you feel out of your depth, but showing you are trying is worth more than you may realise at the time.

I highly recommend undertaking a rotation to another work office or team during your graduate program. I am thankful my graduate coordinator and mentor encouraged me to take the step out of my comfort zone and into a new team/office as it opened my eyes to a completely different role, client group and team culture.

What is your advice for graduates applying for jobs?

Think carefully about the presentation of your resume and include only relevant information. Research as much as possible and answer specific questions without being too broad or vague.
